Children Mischief

Post  Stormphyre on Tue Jul 27, 2010 5:56 pm

Some ten years ago from the current past, when rumors were merely whispers and hardly a concern, a young girl of hardly seven years rushed from family chambers, her eyes deep blue in unhappyness. She dodged the nursemaid's hand as it reached for her arm and begged for her to quiet down and return. She darted away, refusing to return to the room where her older siblings were. Troy was there, the brute! He had called her a runt, and it stung. She was well aware that she was much smaller than other children her age, she did not needed it pointed out to her.
She was quick to hide behind the tapestry covering a hidden doorway that she had seen servants take. She peered just around the tapestry as the nursemaid came around the corner and hurried past. Huffing, she pushed the door open and slipped inside the cool tunnel, making her way down into the kitchen area. She paused at the exit, finding it empty, and slipped out, pulling a chair to the counter and climbed up to grab a sweet roll, and then a second. That done, she made her way out of the kitchen less Aaron, the Master Chef, caught her.
Out the door she went into the servant's garden area. It, surprisingly, was mostly empty too. Normally it bustled with gossip and chattering. That was fine with her, however. She thought that perhaps if she had any other servant fussing over her, she would scream. She half thought of finding her mother, who she had been told was greeting a new family into their staff.

Asca fidgeted. She knew being hired by the royal family was a great thing, and being greeted by the queen herself was wonderful. But did she really have to wear her holyday best? It was itchy, and a dress besides. Her mother picked her up before her father could notice. It was never good for him to notice her misbehaving. The queen really was a pretty lady...But she wouldn't stop talking! Ugh all this formal junk was awful. Asca sighed loudly and dramatically, then starting twisting her wild hair into wilder curls. After years of talking, the queen offered to lead them to their new home, at which point Asca was set down to walk on her own. They were shown the various parts of the castle-stables, smithy, other some such places, til they got to the kitchens. By that point her parents were suitably distracted, so Asca dashed for the garden. It would be quiet and smell nice after all. She liked gardens. She didn't like other strange little girls in the middle of gardens though, which is what she got. With the typical grace of a brash child, she demanded,

"Who are you hiding from? Go find a different hiding place-this one's mine."

Nibbling on the roll, Deja halted upon hearing the voice. Well, that was interesting.
Really interesting. In fact, it was so interesting, she nearly choked stifling a giggle. Her blue eyes sparkled with mischief or something of the sort, turning to face the girl more directly.
"Is that so?" she asked, dressed almost like a peasant rather than a princess. No fancy dress, only a ragged tunic and trousers, torn at the knee from rough housing with her brothers. Her mother had long since given up trying to get her to wear a dress like a normal child, at least, on days that did not require a better presentation. "Who are you?" she pried, grinning, a tooth missing and its replacement not quite having grown in completely.

This intruder girl was rude! Asca resisted sticking her tongue out. Did she have a roll? The girl's stomach growled. It had been a while since her breakfast of coarse porridge. She smacked her stomach as she replied.

"I'm Asca! Since you won't tell me who you're hiding from, do you know any other places? My stinky parents will probably come looking for me soon..."

She looked around the garden, flourishing with herbs and vegetables. They were pretty tall, so she could probably hide in them...Plus it would smell nice. Most of her old hiding places were pretty smelly.

She snorted, obviously not feeling particularly hurried to actually answer any questions. At least not in a useful way. "I know lots of hiding places," she replied, nibbling on her bun again.
"Why is Asca hiding from her parents in the servant garden?" she asked, tilting her head to the side, glancing briefly into the kitchen to make sure no servant had come in, not particularly wanting to be found yet either. She motioned her to follow, turning down one of the paths into the garden.

Asca flushed a bright scarlet at the girl's question and would have answered, but she had already turned to lead her down some path.

"What kind of hiding places do you know? Do they all smell nice?" Asca wasn't sure who this girl was, so she thought sticking to the important subject of hiding places was better than questions about her origins.

She twitched her skirt to keep it from tangling in the taller grasses and plants of the gardens. Sure was a big and nice place!

She glanced back at her, somewhat glad for the company. It was certainly different company from what she was used to. Towering grown-ups or snobby kids in the court. This one didn't seem to mind getting a tad dirty. "Some of them do. Some don't," she replied with a grin, hurrying along excitedly. "I know all the hiding places in the castle! And I know how to get out too!" she cheered. She had seen her older brother sneak out once unnoticed. He had only done it once or twice, but she knew the place.
She hurried past the largest compost heap ever and into the stable yards, the tall grasses and flowers quickly dropping away into short grasses. It was bustling with stable hands leading the horses about, but hardly anyone took notice. Just in case, though, Deja stuck to the back side, only noticed by a curious horse in a paddock munching hay.
"Has Asca seen the city?" she asked, pausing suddenly enough for the follower to run into if she was following too closely.

The winding route her new friend took fascinated Asca. So much all in this one place! It was like a village. And a stable! Horses are so cool, the girl thought as she stared at the one watching the girls.

"You know all of the hidin-"her sentence was cut short by smacking into the girl.

"Ow! My parents lived in the city before I was born, but we lived in a village until about a month ago. We came back here because there wasn't enough work to be found, so Pa decided we should move. We lived in the slums until today. Have you seen the city?"

"Uh... Most of them. There's some tunnels under the castle," she replied, after catching her step. Glancing to make sure the coast was clear, and hurried onward. "I've been to the city lots of times!" she replied. "Just... not usually on the ground," she added quietly, heading down a slope towards the guarded wall. However, guards kept their gaze beyond the walls rather than the inside of the wall.

She paused, the grass tall along the wall, glancing over her shoulder before shoving it to the side. There was a bit more of a drop and into a tunnel. She slipped down the side and down into the tunnel, worming her way below the wall to where it dropped lower. Eventually, she was able to stand up, with only a few inches above her head. The tunnel continued to drop and widen a bit until it was large enough for a tall adult to walk and rather roomy. Deja was rather glad she wasn't near tall enough to reach the top as they were covered in spider webs, proof they hadn't been traveled in for quite some time.

Asca paused when her guide walked into the tunnel. Asca didn't like tunnels. She didn't like the dark, or closed in places very much...But she wasn't about to let her new friend know that. So she plunged onward into the webby tunnels, trying to distract herself with chatter.

"So where do these tunnels go? Do you ever play any games? We could play one while we walk. OH! Do you know any stories about magic and freedom? There's sooo many stories in the villages..." The girl trailed off as she remembered nights in the town square, listening to the elders telling stories and myths.

She paused at the babbling questions, looking over her shoulder as she continued forward. "Freedom? Everyone is free," she replied. "Unless you've done something really really bad!"

It was true, the people of Rynial were free. Though, there were those who thought them above others, and under ground slavery, especially in the areas far to the south where the King's watchful eye did not reach, and where the stewards became lazy or could not get to.

She turned her gaze forward again, quickly scrambling under a low hanging web before she walked into it. "I know magic," she replied quietly, though didn't push on the subject. "What games do you know?" she asked instead.
